YMCA hits multi-million milestone in fundraising
Kokomo Family YMCA has hit its $10 million mark for the organization’s Beyond the Bricks Campaign. A substantial undisclosed donation from Kokomo Grain has propelled Kokomo Family YMCA’s fundraising closer to its $16 million goal. The money – raised from City of Kokomo, Howard County and multiple businesses – will build a 73,000-square-foot facility featuring a lap pool and walking track. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be complete by December 2015 or January 2016.
Gun fired at Macy home
A Rochester man is facing a criminal recklessness charge after he fired a handgun at a home near Macy on Monday. James Huffman, 26, shot at the residence after the home’s residents wouldn’t allow him to see his 2-year-old daughter, who also lived at the home. According to police, Huffman fled the scene in a SUV driven by 37-year-old Matthew Heckathorn, before state troopers arrived on the scene. The two men were later arrested in South Bend.
Home-schooled students may compete with Eastern school students
Eastern Schools may incorporate home-schooled students into its sports and extracurricular programs. The Eastern board of education completed a first reading on the proposed policy at its Oct. 7 meeting. Indiana High School Athletic Association added a new bylaw for 2013-2014 school year that allows students from non-public or non-accredited schools to participate in public school activities.
Comic lovers unite
KokomoCon is bringing comic lovers together with a leader in comic writing. Marvel and DC Comics writer and editor Denny O’Neil will be a guest of honor for the extravaganza at Ivy Tech Kokomo Event and Conference Center Saturday. The fifth annual comic fest will feature 155 vendor booths; and bring in more than 1,800 fans of history’s favorite super heroes.
A season’s end
Kokomo Speedway will race for the last time this season Friday and Saturday nights – as part of the annual Kokomo Klash. Sprint cars, midgets and mini sprints will race Friday night. Saturday night will welcome modified and stock cars to the track. Friday night racing will start at 6 p.m. Saturday night racing are slated for 4 p.m.
