Here’s more proof that emojis are on their way to replacing the English language.
Oxford Dictionaries just announced their word of the year for 2015, and they picked: an emoji. Specifically, a smiley face that’s laughing so hard TEARS are coming out of its eyes. Apparently it’s the most used emoji in the U.S. and the U.K.
The editors say: “Although emojis have been a staple of texting teens for some time, emoji culture exploded into the global mainstream over the past year. Emojis have come to embody a core aspect of living in a digital world.”
Even though an emoji is the word of the year, they say they don’t have any plans to add them to their dictionaries — yet. The actual wprd”emoji” has been in the Oxford English Dictionary since 2013.
