If you fail, try, try again

Back when you were 16 and you went to get your license, did you ace the driving test your first time? If so, we kindly ask that you get off the road.

A new study found that people who pass their driver’s test on the first try are actually more likely to get into accidents than people who failed, and had to retake it.

The safest drivers are people who passed on their third try.

The theory is that people who pass it on one try get overconfident, and forget a lot of the safety rules they had to learn for it. But people who have to study, practice, and retake the test retain a lot more information and drive more cautiously.

Thirty-two percent of the people who failed on their first try say they’re still more careful drivers because of all their studying and 27 percent say the extra practice to finally pass gave them more skills.
