Netflix’s brief description of the 1995 animated movie “Pocahontas” used to be, quote, “An American Indian woman is supposed to marry the village’s best warrior, but she yearns for something more . . . and soon meets Captain John Smith.”
But a blogger who writes about Native American issues had a problem with that, because, quote, “The use of ‘woman’ and ‘yearns’ is so disgusting. It sounds like a porn description. Or a bad romance novel.”
She went on: “The men get to have adventures, fight people, save things, be king of the jungle . . . Pocahontas yearns for a white dude.”
Netflix caught wind of her comments, and they agreed with her. The summary was changed to: “A young American Indian girl tries to follow her heart and protect her tribe when settlers arrive and threaten the land she loves.”
